Desmond, Altair and Ezio are now playable in this fantastic story being the best Assassin's Creed release
9/10
The conclusion for the Assassin’s Creed is here with Assassin’s Creed Revelations. Ubisoft will take you to the final adventures of Altair and Ezio in an epic adventure which goes through both Assassins’ lives. Thou they lived two separate lives their journey is common and with Revelations, the experience is one of a kind.
The story starts you off with Desmond, and while your memories along with your brain are falling apart and you will end up stuck in the limbo of the Anumis 2.03. In this part you will meet another lost soul, 16 who will give you the tour of the limbo which is basically the test level of the Anumis. You will soon learn that you seem to be stuck inside your mind as you have unfinished business with your past and you need to finish what was started with Ezio and Altair. You must visit them and close any connection with them so that your mind can be reordered and the memories fully restored. This will enable you to find yourself and the Anumis to release you from the Test World. You start off by walking in the mirror like wall and start off with a cool cut-scene where Ezio makes a stunning escape from death by hanging.
There are a lot of things happening in the storyline as you play with Ezio in his quest to uncover the secrets of the brotherhood and finding the so called temple of imaginable power and wisdom. This temple or so called library was guarded and put hidden by Altair and to Ezio’s time he was looking for the secret before the Templars get to it. The storyline of Ezio evolves much in the socially disrupted Constantinople. Apart from that Ezio will manage to find romance and love in the turmoil around him as he finds his soul mate Sophia. You must find your way into the Masyal’s castle and find Altair’s hidden library and the Grand temple to lead you to the Apple of Eden.
The storyline is quite impressive and has made huge improvements from its predecessor. The cinematic scenes are fantastic and at the right moment with the dramatic effect you would expect. Especially the facial expressions along with body movements make the scene authentic while adding a very good voice acting plus a well-crafted soundtrack make the cinematic parts more appealing and involve you more in the story. Thou the story mostly involve you playing as Ezio, you will get the chance of playing with Altair in some parts. Thou these missions are somewhat similar to Ezio’s they can get quite tricky and difficult. These parts where you play as the original assassin will reveal moments of Altair’s life and will help you combine and solve some mysteries around Ezio and the Brotherhood. This was a nice touch to the gameplay and it’s will mix up the gameplay in a way to help you more enjoy the game even more.
If you have played its predecessor you will not feel much of a difference in the gameplay or mechanics of the gameplay, like you will have a number of missions around the city, steal wallets along the way, assassinate people and killing guards. Instead of changing the game, Ubisoft have introduced a number of additions to the game. To help you be more responsive during a fight, the controls have been changed a bit allowing you to directly accessing the secondary weapons without going through many configurations. Along this subject bombs have been introduced to help you combine a mix of combat skills. Bombs can be used either against foes, or combined with other elements can be used as smoke bombs, shooting out coins to gather the hungry peasant and distract the guards. Most of these skills are achieved in Constantinople and you will meet the some other members of the Brotherhood who will gradually teach you their special skills.
During combat you will be introduced to the Hook-Blade in Constantinople which will add a hook extension to your pulse blade that can be used for various skills. You can use the hook to make the Hook-And-Jump which by pressing the circles on your gamepad will allow you to grab and slide round your enemy while running towards him and keep running. Also it can be used as an extension so that when you are doing a long jump which you normally can’t reach, you press the circle to release the hook and grab yourself to the ledge. Apart from that you can use the hook to grab on to a rope and zip-line down from building to building. While zip lining, if a foe in underneath you, you can make a drop-down assassination. Another small addition to the game is the Parachute which can be activated by pressing the square button. This is very handy especially when you fall from a 12 story tower while trying to climb it or if some guards throw stones to get you down.
In its predecessors you would be able to take areas controlled by the Templars by killing their captain and lighting up the tower. In addition to that, now the Templars will try to take the area back by introducing the Den Defence side missions. Basically this is like a strategy part where you will be like the commanding officer on top of the roof overlooking the street that leads to the Den and you must instruct the other assassins in the brotherhood to defend the place. You will deploy a leader on the roof which will allow you to place riflemen and archers on each part of the roof to defend the area. In addition to that you can then use cannons and barricade on the street to stop the oppressors. You will gain experience when keeping your Den safe from waves of enemies along with money which can be spent on armour and weapons while unlocking new stuff to your arsenal like Air Assassins. Thou this new addition was a nice touch, it would have needed more attention in the design. If you lose, you will have to go through all the process of killing the captain, leaving you with wasted time defending it. The controls are a bit messy and it doesn’t add much to the gameplay experience. It should definitely need more polishing.
Another addition to the gameplay which is more futuristic and modern is the levels that you play by being Desmond. These parts where you will need to fight your way out of the Anumis and reclaim your memories and mind will be played in first person which involve you using two shaped blocks to put around the Anumis to reach the intended path. Graphically it’s good and it will give you a nice memory of the film Tron. Although the Assassin’s Creed series is more towards the era of Altair and Ezio, it’s a nice addition to the gameplay. The Desmond parts are like a puzzle in a nutshell and despite being a bit on the simplistic side, it will not break the core experience of the game, but it will give you a break from the combat-driven sessions of the Brotherhood.
The multiplayer part of the game is mostly similar to the one found in the predecessor, but mostly interesting as a number of new modes, customization option, a better interface and a story line have been introduced. Thou having the looks of a single-player game, Ubisoft have managed to create an interesting and enjoyable multiplayer adoption of the game. The modes manage to create a unique experience and get you to the goal in many ways and will certainly give your great replay-ability when you finish the single-player.
Conclusion
Assassin’s Creed Revelations is the best in its series having a very good storyline, well improved graphics combined with great voice acting; fantastic soundtrack some additions to the gameplay, will make a memorable experience. Despite not being so different from The Brotherhood, the game managed to make a hit. The new additions like the Hook-Blade and the fantastic Dungeon sequences are a great touch. The only thing that needed more polishing or a different approach was the Den defence which in my opinion was given less priority. The storyline is great and with the additional multiplayer components it’s thoroughly the best Assassin’s Creed experience you can get.
