The third person shooter with always changing battlefields and using your companion to eliminate your enemies

Quantum Theory has been published by Tecmo based in a third person view with a cover-base shooting experience developed by Team Tachyon. The story and game has been designed and produced by Kohei Shibata. The game, for those players who have already experienced Gears of War, it will look that Quantum Theory has been greatly influenced by the series, with their heavy armour and massive boss battles. However it doesn’t mean that Quantum Theory doesn’t have its own unique features.

The game’s story is set after a great world war which has destroyed the life on this world as we know it and killed almost all humanity with few survivors. These survivors have formed a community called the Cocoon who is on a constant threat by the Erosion, a mysterious dark entity sworn to eradicate what’s left from humanity. This is where you come in where you play the role of Syd along with his companion Filena who are commissioned by humanity to fight back the Erosions by destroying their source of power also known as the Living Tower; being where most of the game takes place. Along the story mode you will fight your way to the top of the Living Tower, discovering its secrets. The tower is basically alive which make it interesting in gameplay and mechanics where it will open doors to shifting grounds and some other shape shifting environments. This is where you have to move from cover to cover since nowhere is safe.

As I have mentioned before, the game is highly inspired by Gears of War in genre and in gameplay where your game advancement is driven by covering from one place to another and of course wipe out all Erosions. During the singleplayer story mode, you can only control the main character Syd but then you can use Filena for some combo moves to affect a combination of team melee attacks. During gameplay you can use her to give her a boost towards the enemy so she can slash them. Talking about controls, these are very similar to Gears of War with the reload having the same button. It seems that the game was released for the fact that Gears of War made a very good success with the game type and wanted to make something similar. The game was designed to take advantage of the environment to create an experience for the user to have some incentive to use his surroundings, but unfortunately few parts do so.

The game thou, as explained before has its unique moments where Filena can be used anytime of the gameplay. Syd can pick her up and throw her to affect an instant kill depending on the enemy power or she can be used to perform some nifty combo moves. The game has also some moments of platform-play since the tower will be shifting and changing shapes where you need to jump around some areas and the covering positions can disappear at any time.

Given the fact that in some of the moments the gameplay leaves few cover opportunities, you will end up going from one place to another without stopping to evade the enemies’ shots. Syd, is a huge character and from being a heavy fellow it’s a bit difficult to picture him rolling around punching people and shooting while hoping to remain alive. Thou some would like some hectic battles; it may get a little bit frustrating. The game provides a very well designed battlefield with a lot of covering places; the battles might get a bit boring where it would seem that the game was extended by the fact of the number of enemy waves being thrown to you. The AI is not that difficult to get around since they will either run straight to you or take cover or shoot from the same cover position. Talking about cover, the mechanics behind it aren’t very engaging since it isn’t quite fluid. This being for the fact that you need to press a button to move away from a covering position rather than using the analogue stick.

When it comes to graphics, the game has very good and detailed environments and the bosses are very well crafted and it makes a good point in the darkness of humanity in it's final times. The graphics is one of the things that was right with the game and it was well designed. The game does get challenging in some times where you can be instantly killed which is usually during boss fights. Some moments you will also be presented with some platform moments which are not easy to progress since the jumping mechanism is not that good. It’s a situation of where you either do it perfect or die immediately. The multiplayer section of the game offers team battles and battle royal modes which basically are team deathmatch and deathmatch being populated with a variety of maps taken from the storyline. The experience is the same sensation of the single player and there isn’t much to say about it.

Conclusion

The game is a good concept and although it has some failings, the game is still fun and how things blow up is interesting. The use of Filena to make some combo moves is interesting, but that is what makes it unique. The storyline is a bit dodgy and the game mechanics and gameplay needed more polishing.
