They are here, run to Stinkys diner as the swarm of naked Sams invades the city and steal all your toys!
8/10
Telltale games have done a wonderful job with the Sam and Max series and really hope to see a lot more from the Freelance police. The series has taken a right track to supply the gamers with a great adventure full of suspense, adventure, love and action, and with this episode... Telltale hit all corners of entertainment. Welcome to the 4th episode, Beyond the alley of the dolls.
We last saw Sam in his epic fight against Skun-ka'pe and then finishing Sammun-Mak's reign after removing his brain and putting Max's brain back where it belongs. When trying to find a safe place where to hide the Devil's Toy Box before any jerk-wad tried to get his hands on, Messier Papierwaite comes running in the room shouting 'Sam is coming, Sam is coming'. Little did our heroes realize what was coming to them as a swarm of naked Sams invaded the museum!
In this episode, all your answers which have been a mystery will be revealed and all the crazy events will be clear. Two important discoveries would be who is Dr. Norringhton and how the hell did Messier Papierwaite manage to remain alive all these centuries. You start off with Stinky arguing with grandpa Stinky over the fact that he fired Sal from the post of diner chef. Well who's to blame him? I don't think that anyone would go and eat somewhere where the chef is a cockroach! Apart from that from the alley they see rushing into the diner, Max, Sam and Skun-ka'pe... but why? Well after seeing an army of naked Sams, you just run to the hills, in this case Stinky's diner. These naked brain-dead zombie Sams that Sam calls Samulcra and Max insists on calling them Dogglegangers are after the Devil's toy box toys, while these things have surrounded the whole town breaking into the people's houses and stealing their children's toys. They have completely surrounded the diner and Sam has to find a way out from this mess to escape and find out who or what is behind this invasion.
This episode, in my opinion is one of the best in this series since it involves a lot of action, and the humor is one of a kind. Max is always the funny bunny busting dark humor, criticism and his obscene thoughts make you laugh your pants off, especially when Messier Papierwaite says the words 'dark dimension'! Basically you will meet almost all the gang of characters in the series, well the German tourist and Frankie the rat are out of this episode. There are some new fellows... one which should not be named so that it doesn't spoil your game and Bluster Blaster who is an arcade machine which went for a boy's night out with Bosco to Las Vegas... sadly it didn't turn how they thought it would go. This episode involves a love story, contacts with the dead, a horrible secret unveiled and an ending of epic proportions! Literally! As gameplay, it's like Telltale have mastered adventure games pretty well with the controls and gameplay experience, while the puzzles are well balanced with the sense of adventure and difficulty to keep the story interesting. The plot of the game is very well presented and honestly, will keep you stuck to our heroes till the end while leaving you drooling to see the last chapter of the Devil's Playhouse next month.
Conclusion
Any old or new school adventurer would love this episode and Sam & Max fans will immediately get stuck to the Freelance Police. This episode is full of surprises and it reveals a lot of mysteries surrounding the story behind the Toybox and its origins and what is it. This episode would rather be the best episode so far in this season, with its great plot and story and after you complete this episode you will eagerly go to the future to get the ending plot of The City that Dares Not Sleep.
