Starcraft 2 and the next Command and Conquer recently revealed that LAN play will not be supported anymore!
Not so long (and not far far away), gamers had the pleasure and the pride to show off their talents to their pals when competing with one another during LAN parties or on their personal home machines with games that supported LAN mode. Later on however, this concept took a complete twist and somehow backfired when the developers and publishers noted an increase in the number of players who were not making us of an original game.
Indeed LAN mode usually offered multiplayer and co-op campaigns on network even if the game was a pirated copy. It certainly looks like that if developers and publishers proceed ahead with such move to annihilate LAN, then the element of Real Time Strategy game genre from LAN parties and other gaming gathering events will be killed off. This move has really struck and offended gamers especially considering performance issues. Some issues reported in the petition are calling to save the LAN support for the reason of lag, and customer convenience.
It will create some issues when connecting from different locations and it will surely have an impact on the latency of the games while affecting the game experience. In the petition raised on http://www.petitiononline.com/LANSC2/petition.html, 100,000 signed the petition to sound their opposition to Blizzard for removing the LAN support and depends solely on the Battle.NET servers. Although there are 100,000 voices shouting to Blizzard to keep the LAN support, till now... Blizzard will keep their word and not support the LAN feaure.Since EA with their new Command and Conquer 4 have also announced that there will be no LAN support, it makes you think if there are any expenses set for users.
After all, it might be the case where certain publishers and developers's main concern is just money. Are games really affected financial-wise if the LAN feature still lingers on? Will there be a monthly charge if a player decides to play a game with his friend? Well, we have to wait and see what the cat drags in next time. We will keep you posted on this one as soon as we have an update.
